Abstract

In contemporary philosophy, the notions of selfhood and alterity have become central notions in the reconsideration of metaphysics and ethics. These two fundamental notions recur especially frequently in the texts of Levinas and Ricoeur. In this article, our aim is to introduce the discussion of the notion of selfhood and alterity as a problem in contemporary philosophy. If in one sense selfhood is a relationship that is realized in the meeting with others in the context of human interaction, then selfhood and alterity play a major role in subjectivity. Within an ethics perspective, we attempt to analyze alterity as a foundational site of meaning for selfhood. One the other hand, as Levinas attempts to show in Totality and Infinity according to the meaning of existence, this ethics dimension aims towards metaphysics itself. This metaphysics as ethics could give a new possibility to think about being as the contemporary philosophical response to subjectivity. Our work is a research about this new possibility
