As in many other cultures, we see that in Ancient Greece, sleep was thought of in an allegorical, metaphorical, and even physiological relationship with death. Death is usually described as an endless sleep, and sleep as a temporary death, or these two phenomena are brought together in a physiological framework. This article aims to examine how Aristotle shakes the philosophical ground of all these similarities between sleep and death, established before him from different angles, by saying at the beginning of the second book of De anima that “both sleep and wakefulness depend upon the soul’s presence,” and to investigate the conceptual conditions of this Aristotelian transformation.
