Karl Marx’s The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 is a very important text in understanding his conception of alienation. In this text, four different forms of alienation are mentioned. However, when Marx’s explanations concerning these forms of alienation are analyzed, it becomes manifest that indeed one of them, species alienation, is more basic and all the other forms of alienation stem from this form of alienation. The claim that species alienation is the basic form of alienation makes possible both grounding Marx’s claim that alienation is the cause of private property and showing that alienation is not a fact that is peculiar to capitalist system.
